Transplant 101

Basic Information about kidney donation:

  •  You only need one kidney to live a long, healthy life.

  •  A Kidney donor needs to go through an evaluation process to test compatibility with the recipient. This includes blood tests for HIV and Hepatitis series, chest x-ray, EKG, CT Scan, consultation with the living donor coordinator and transplant social worker.

  • Most donor surgery is done laparoscopically, meaning through a tiny incision.

  • The recovery period is usually quick, generally two weeks.

  • My health insurance will cover your evaluation and surgery. The transplant center can give you extensive information on this.

  • You will have a separate team of healthcare professionals that will evaluate you as living donor.

  • Donating a kidney puts you at the top of the donor list for the rest of your life; if you ever need a kidney in the future.
