KIDNEY
FOR DINDA
Transplant 101
Basic Information about kidney donation:
-
You only need one kidney to live a long, healthy life.
-
A Kidney donor needs to go through an evaluation process to test compatibility with the recipient. This includes blood tests for HIV and Hepatitis series, chest x-ray, EKG, CT Scan, consultation with the living donor coordinator and transplant social worker.
-
Most donor surgery is done laparoscopically, meaning through a tiny incision.
-
The recovery period is usually quick, generally two weeks.
-
My health insurance will cover your evaluation and surgery. The transplant center can give you extensive information on this.
-
You will have a separate team of healthcare professionals that will evaluate you as living donor.
-
You can still be a donor even if we are not medically compatible through Kidney Pair donation. Read more: https://unos.org/wp-content/uploads/unos/Living_Donation_KidneyPaired.pdf

Donating a kidney puts you at the top of the donor list for the rest of your life; if you ever need a kidney in the future.
